£150k to Tackle City Poverty

Published - Tuesday, 10 June, 2008

The grants will employ key personnel who will help to develop the vital work of these organisations, who work to support the city’s least advantaged people.

The Food Bank provides emergency food supplies to individuals and families in need. Last year they supplied food parcels to 1,342 adults and 569 children in Milton Keynes - and the demand for the service continues to rise. The role of the development worker will help raise awareness of this need and strengthen relations with supporters to ensure regular sustainable support.

The Credit Union provides a safe, ethical saving and loan facility to its members who otherwise would not have access to these services.

Philip Turnbull, Chair of Credit Union explains:

“The grant enables us to be able to introduce our services to many more people in Milton Keynes who are unable to borrow from traditional financial institutions; or who need a simple method of saving on a regular basis. We  will be able to offer an ethical alternative to high-interest doorstep lenders."

Newly appointed development worker, Kim Davies says she is looking forward with enthusiasm to help achieve these objectives and to work with community organisations to help address financial exclusion in Milton Keynes”.

The Milton Keynes Community Foundation are delighted to have been able to support these invaluable projects and look forward to monitoring their progress in the months ahead.
